Supporting Older Adults & Adults with Disabilities
Mission Neighborhood Centers has been supporting older adults and adults with disabilities in the Mission District for over forty years. Mission Neighborhood Centers’ Senior Center takes a client-centered, culturally-responsive approach to supporting older adults and adults with disabilities to help them live more independent and fulfilling lives.
Located in our historic Capp Street building, the Senior Center provides a wide range of social services, educational programs, and recreational activities designed for low-income seniors. The sense of community we offer is a positive pathway to prevent the isolation and depression that elders often experience. Our seniors are empowered to take responsibility for healthy aging through their active social, emotional, mental, and physical engagement.
Programs & Activities
All programs are offered in both English and Spanish with some computer classes offered in Chinese.
Technology Literacy
MNC provides technology classes every day in English, Spanish and Cantonese and has a computer lab with 12 desktop computers and 14 computer tablets. We have a very active technology literacy program that allows our participants to learn computer skills, search the web, become part of relevant social networks, interact with their doctors, research topics of interest, learn English, become better aware of current activities and stay in touch with their family members, among other skills. In addition to computer classes, we also incorporate classes on tablets and phone usage since many of our clients cannot afford or own a computer.
We also maximize the reach of our computer lab by utilizing volunteers from The Community Technology Network to provide computer training in Cantonese twice per week. Our full-time instructor who provides classes in English/Spanish also provides tablet and phone literacy classes to seniors and adults with disabilities at two senior housing complexes, Mission Plaza, and Esperanza Apartments.
Due to high demand, we are seeking funding to purchase additional tablets to launch a Tablet Library where seniors are able to sign-out tablets for a given period of time so that they can continue to have access to technology in their place or residency or at various hot spots throughout our City.
Technology literacy is one of the core objectives of our senior “healthy aging” program as it is very evident that it builds confidence and connectedness, generates a sense of belonging, improves cognitive skills and empowers our seniors to live independent lives.
